The number of workplace injuries on construction jobs in Hawaii has dropped over the past eight years. The drop in injuries is reflective of the enhanced safety programs that have been enacted throughout the private and public sectors. The U.S. Department of Labor estimated that there were 6.2 cases of workplace injury or illness for every 100 Hawaiian construction employees in 2008. In 2003 the injury rate was at 10.3. The 2008 injury rate on the Mainland U.S. was 4.7. When looking to further decrease job site injury rates and tighten the metric of loss work time due to off-site medical treatment, employers should look at adding on-site medical services and comprehensice drug and alcohol testing to all long term construction projects.
