Peru is Now Biggest Producer of Coca Leaf Used to Make Cocaine

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has reported that Peru has become the top producer of the coca leaf which is the main component in making cocaine. Peruvian production has overtaken long time leader Colombia. The UN claims that government efforts in the drug war in Colombia are responsible for that country's decline in production. Peruvian production has grown two-fold over the past 10 years and has increased the country's world supply to about 45%. Colombia's share has fallen to 39%.
